Abstract: A decrease in serum TBA level reflected histological improvement in the liver more precisely than did changes in the other liver function test values following IFN therapy.

“…Altered bile cholesterol levels have been implicated in gallstone related problems, including gallbladder cancer. Increased levels of bile acids in serum have also been reported in liver disease, indicating the altered physiology of biliary metabolites in patients with liver related problems [15][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…5 Hepatotoxicity implicated from occupational and drug exposure has also been associated with elevations in total bile acid concentrations. [9][10][11][12][13] Recently, we published the results of a clinical investigation conducted in 11 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients on the pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of an antiretroviral regimen that included three protease inhibitors: amprenavir, ritonavir, and saquinavir. 14 During that study, drug-induced hepatotoxicity was diagnosed in one of the 11 patients.…”

“…In contrast, TNF-␣ was associated with hepatic inflammation, but not with fibrosis. Other tests were investigated, including glutathione, 60 ␣ fetoprotein, 69,73,80 prothrombin time, 70,71,76 pseudocholinesterase, 70 manganese superoxide dismutase, 70 ␤-N-galactosidase, 70 ␣-2-macroglobin, 70 ␤-globulin, 70 albumin, 70,76 ␥ glutamyl transpeptidase, 70,71,76,81 bilirubin, 61,71,76 lactate dehydrogenase, 76 AST, 71,76 alkaline phosphatase, 76 white blood cell count, 76 creatinine, 71 total bile acids, 81 and immunoglobulin G. 51 Similar to the cytokines, these tests frequently were associated with fibrosis. However, these markers were less useful as a group than the markers discussed above, and only limited data were available on these markers.…”
