Serum osteoprotegerin level is positively associated with peripheral artery disease in patients with peritoneal dialysis

Abstract: Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a potential biomarker of cardiovascular disease complications and severity. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with an increased risk of death in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between serum OPG levels and PAD by measuring the ankle-brachial index (ABI) of patients on PD. A commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit was used to measure OPG values. Left or right ABI values of <0.9 were categorized as the … Show more

“…Kt/V and urea reduction ratio (URR) using a formal and single-compartment dialysis urea kinetic model were used to calculate adequacy of HD. Serum OPG (eBioscience Inc., San Diego, CA, USA) and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels (Abcam, Cambridge, MA, USA) were measured by using a commercially available enzyme immunoassay or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively [ 23 ]. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as (body weight)/(body height) 2 (kg)/(m) 2 [ 24 ].…”

“…Blood pressure was measured using the oscillometric method in both arms and ankles for three times, with the patient in the supine position, and readings were obtained from brachial, dorsalis pedis, and posterior tibial arteries (VaSera VS-1000; Fukuda Denshi, Tokyo, Japan). 11 Right or left ABI was calculated as the ratio of the highest-measured systolic blood pressure in right or left ankle (dorsalis pedis or posterior tibial artery) to the highest-measured systolic blood pressure in brachial artery of either arm. Real-time electrocardiography was documented for more than 15 min.…”

“…In this regard, elevated circulating OPG level has been proposed as a predictor of cardiovascular [ 17 , 18 ] and all-cause [ 19 , 20 ] mortality in patients with CKD. Serum OPG level is positively associated with peripheral artery disease, arterial stiffness, and arterial calcification in patients with end-stage renal disease [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. Moreover, kidney transplantation decreases circulating level of OPG [ 25 ], and early post-transplantation circulating OPG level in serum predicts long-term patient survival up to 8 years [ 26 ], collectively suggesting a prognostic impact of circulating OPG level in patients with renal insufficiency.…”
