Serum levels of prostate-specific antigen in normal boys throughout puberty.

Abstract: Serum levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) were measured in a group of 132 normal boys distributed in stages 1-5 of puberty. A highly sensitive (0.005 ng/mL) immunofluorometric assay was developed and used in the study. PSA levels were generally undetectable in state I and rose sharply from stage II to III and from stage III to IV. A significant positive correlation was found between PSA and testosterone levels, PSA and LH levels, PSA and age, PSA and testicular volume, as well as PSA and pubertal stage. … Show more

“…In our KS boys, serum SHBG decreased normally and the levels did not differ from those observed in the controls. During puberty, serum PSA levels are in healthy boys a potential marker of T action (32)(33)(34)(35). The normal increase in serum PSA during puberty in our cohort of boys with KS suggests sufficient androgen action in the prostate.…”

“…No statistical connection was established between ED and LUTS (p>0.05). Serum PSA level is varies according to age, gender and the prostate volume [14].PSA level shows an increase of 0,04 ng/ml per year in men without benign prostatic hyperplasia [15].However change rate of PSA level is 0,07 to 0,27 ng/ml per year in men between the ages of 60-85 with BPH [16]. Each of the increase 1 ml in prostate volume are known to enhance of PSA 4% [17].…”

“…A score ranging from 0 to 5 was assigned with "5 times" or "6 or more times" corresponding to a score of 5. These scores were summed to create a score ranging from 0 to 35, which we categorized into 4 groups: no or low (0-7), low-moderate (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14), high-moderate (15)(16)(17)(18)(19), The maximum score is 25. Using acutoff score of 21, the sensitivity and specificity of discriminating between ED and no-ED are 0.98 and 0.88, respectively [11].…”

“…A direct relationship between androgen level and PSA synthesis on RNA [14] and protein-level has been described in vitro [15] and PSA was suggested to be a useful marker of testosterone activity in vivo [16,17]. Further, androgen replacement therapy results in modest PSA elevations in healthy old men [18] as well as in men treated for hypogonadism or osteoporosis [19].…”
