Serum ischemia modified albumin is a possible new marker of oxidative stress in phenylketonuria

Abstract: The role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of phenylketonuria (PKU)-associated disorders has been implicated. Ischemia modified albumin (IMA) is a modified form of serum albumin, which is produced under the conditions of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to measure the serum level of IMA in the PKU patients and to investigate its ability in predicting the status of oxidative stress in these patients. Fifty treated-PKU patients and fifty age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were included in the… Show more

“…We also assessed the importance of IMA in FN. In our investigation, blood levels of IMA were considerably more significant in FN patients than in controls, and it is consistent with the findings of other studies (2,(32)(33)(34). We discovered that, like TDH, the IMA could be used as an oxidative stress indicator.…”

“…Serum IMA levels were measured, using ACB test as described elsewhere [20]. In ACB method, 50 µL of cobalt chloride solution (1 g/L) is added to 200 µl of the serum and followed by vigorous mixing, and 10-min incubation at room temperature.…”

“…However, in our study, the low diagnostic utility of measurements of the oxidative stress marker IMA in T21 pregnancy were demonstrated. Although IMA and AGE have never been measured in T21 pregnancy before, extensive data in the literature suggest their promising diagnostic utility in pre-eclampsia and pregnancy hypertension [57,58]. Despite confirmation of a higher level of oxidative stress, the IMA and AGE levels have been shown to not be remarkably increased in various complications related to T21 gestation [34,42,[59][60][61].…”
