Serum antioxidant capacity in healthy and diabetic subjects as determined by enhanced chemiluminescence

Abstract: Free radicals are considered to be important factors involved in many physiopathological processes. Several methods have been proposed for studying the mechanisms of antioxidant protection against free radical-induced injury, including the measurement of the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in body fluids, based on enhanced chemiluminescence. This technique is calibrated against Trolox and assay results are expressed as mumol/L of Trolox equivalents. Since many of the complications induced by diabetes appear t… Show more

“…The total endogenous antioxidants and ones consumed from food sources give the total antioxidant capacity of the biological system. FRAP gives the total antioxidant capacity in the biological system and is a good indicator of the body's ability to protect itself from ROS [49]. This experimental work indicates that FRAP values in the diabetic control group was significantly lower compared with the normal control group.…”

“…Moreover, separate measurements of various antioxidants' activities can not indicate their full functions due to their overlapping activities. consumption or production and consumption, leading to oxidative stress (Pinzani et al 1998). In this case, the increase in TAC besides no signi cant change in MDA probably proves that the defense system of the APPJ treated cells has not been compromised.…”

“…Chemiluminescence is a luminescent phenomenon directly caused by a chemical reaction without requiring external excitation light. , Compared with fluorescent technology, chemiluminescence can effectively eliminate the phenomenon of photobleaching and light scattering, which avoids the interference of autofluorescence so as to raise the signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity. , However, the weak intensity and poor selectivity of the traditional chemiluminescent systems (e.g., luminol + H 2 O 2 system) and the complexity of biological samples hinder its application for detecting total antioxidant capacity in diabetes. , Thus, the development of a new chemiluminescent system for determining total antioxidant capacity is highly desired.…”
