“…ß-NAH activity is known to be increased in the serum of patients with cirrhosis and with intra-and extrahepatic cholestasis [4], as well as in some other types of liver disease [5,6], Se rum ß-NAH levels may help to discriminate between prolonged (probably malignant) and short-term (probably benign) extrahe patic as well as intrahepatic obstructions [7], They may also be used in research as a useful * p < 0.01 healthy versus both groups of patients. Table II.…”

“…The diagnosis was established on clinical grounds and in occasional patients also on percutaneous renal biopsies. The determination of ß-NAH activity was performed as previously described [7], AST, ALT and ALP were determined according to routine methods. ALP isoenzyme assay was done according to Saga [13] …”

“…Hex B and P contain only P-polypeptide chains. Like other proteins destined for lysosomes, the two subunits of Hex are transported as high molecular weight precursors through endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi (3, 6,7), where they undergo numerous post-translational modifications in transit or after reaching the lysosomes. These include removal of signal peptide, N-glycosylation, formation of disulfide bonds, acquisition of the mannose-6-phosphate (Man-P) recognition marker and limited proteolysis to generate lysosomally localized mature tissue forms.…”

“…Lysosomal enzymes (including Hex) are also present in serum, although in relatively low concentrations. Increased contents in serum of Hex and other lysosomal enzymes are seen in cirrhosis and cholestasis (8,9), and the forms present in serum have been shown to represent precursor forms (6,7). Very little information is, however, available about the properties and concentration of Hex in bile.…”
