Seroprevalence ofTreponema Pallidumantibody among pregnant population of Bangladesh

Abstract: The high seroprevalence of syphilis among pregnant women attending the antenatal clinics of these hospitals indicates the need for the incorporation of screening for syphilis in routine antenatal screening in Bangladesh. Improvement of education level in the female population, prevention of early marriage and preventing polygamy of husbands may play an important role in prevention of syphilis among women.

“…The seroprevalence of syphilis in the current study was 3.7%, which was comparable to studies conducted in Madagascar (3%), 9 Bangladesh (3%), 46 and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (2.9%) 47 In contrast, it was higher than the studies done in Gondar health centers, Ethiopia (2.3%), 16 Tanzania (1.6%), 43 and Gondar teaching hospital, Ethiopia (1%). 15 However, it was lower than previous studies conducted in Northwest Ethiopia (13.7%), 17 Southwestern Nigeria (10%), 48 and Northeast Brazil (7.7%).…”

“…This finding was consistent with a study conducted in Bangladesh. 46 Husbands with low educational levels may not have adequate knowledge about transmission mechanisms of HIV and syphilis, so they may be exposed to the diseases unintentionally. This has been further compounded by low levels of maternal education, low socioeconomic status, low access to health care facilities, gender inequality, and high rate of risky extramarital sexual practices of husbands.…”

“…Interventions including early ANC, massive screening and prompt treatment with antibiotics have been reported to reduce syphilis attributable-risks [46]. Sero-prevalence of syphilis in the current study was 3.7%, which was consistent with studies conducted in Gondar, 3.7% in Gondar [43], 3% in Madagascar [47], Brazil [31] Bangladesh [48] each, and 2.9% in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia [49].…”

“…However, the finding of this study was higher than the findings in Bahir Dar-Ethiopia, Gondar-Ethiopia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Hungary which were (2.6%), (2.9%), (1.98%), (2.96%), and (2.9%) consequently [12,[20][21][22][23]. The possible reason for the difference in the seroprevalence of syphilis between studies might be explained by the difference in socio-demographic characteristics, the cultural difference across the population, the data source (primary or secondary data), and methods used for diagnosis.…”
