Abstract: The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) observes a remarkable feature, the IBEX ribbon, which has energetic neutral atom (ENA) flux over a narrow region ∼20 • wide, a factor of 2-3 higher than the more globally distributed ENA flux. Here, we separate ENA emissions in the ribbon from the distributed flux by applying a transparency mask over the ribbon and regions of high emissions, and then solve for the distributed flux using an interpolation scheme. Our analysis shows that the energy spectrum and spatial di… Show more

“…The five values of this probability for the IBEX-Hi energy channels #2-6 (cf. Table 1 in Schwadron et al 2011) are well fitted with the power law P ∞ surv (ε) ∼ = p 0 · ε b sp (r = 98.3%), with p 0 = 0.728 ± 0.007 and b sp = 0.116 ± 0.011. Both the survival probability and the cross section vary very slowly with energy.…”

“…12 the HSTOF hydrogen data (forward sector) and our model calculations are compared with the recently published ENA data from two dedicated ENA instruments: IBEX Hi (Schwadron et al, 2011: non-ribbon only, four directions: forward, heliotail, west flank and east flank) and INCA (Krimigis et al 2010: the "minimum" flux and two Voyager directions). The model flux is shown for three directions: θ = 0 • , 90 • and 180 • .…”

“…Although we concentrate on particles in the HSTOF energy range, we extend our calculations also to lower energies to compare to the IBEX Schwadron et al 2009Schwadron et al , 2011 and INCA (Krimigis et al 2009(Krimigis et al , 2010(Krimigis et al , 2011 ENA data. We comment briefly on the relation between the lowenergy data and the observations by HSTOF.…”

“…Schwadron et al (2011) used similar arguments to perform a ribbon-separation study from the global ENA map, using hydrodynamic pressures and focusing on the heliotail, while we now perform a study that allows understanding a broader generality of heliospheric directions and spectral properties of the resulting ENAs. To understand the following arguments, one first has to consider the following simple concepts: ENAs produced in the inner heliosheath are generated by charge exchange processes with cold interstellar hydrogen,…”

“…This means that energetic ions are replaced by cold ions, which evidently reduces the spectral intensity of energetic ions in the specific plasma volume element, thus "cooling" the energetic tail of the downstream plasma flow, a concept that was described by Schwadron et al (2011). Therefore, following any volume element advected with the wind along a flow line results in a systematic removal of energetic source ions from this element, until reaching a flow line distance where, due to the removal of energetic source ions, practically no keV-energetic ENAs are produced.…”
