Abstract

Detection of SLN metastasis was helpful in diagnosing follicular thyroid cancer and thus enabling one-stage surgery.

Utility of sentinel lymph node biopsy for thyroid cancer: a comprehensive review

“…SLNB allows for intraoperative identification of lymphatic drainage pathways, including unexpected drainage pathways, and thus is able to facilitate pathological identification of micrometastases [2]. Takeyama et al described a novel application of SLNB to follicular thyroid cancer in a study of 37 patients with follicular-patterned thyroid tumors [53]. While it is impossible to cytopathologically differentiate between benign and malignant follicular-patterned thyroid tumors preoperatively based upon cytology, the presence of lymph node metastasis in these cases is sufficient to make a cancer diagnosis.…”
