In spite of their industrial success, the development of intelligent systems is still a complex and risky task. When building intelligent systems, we see that domain knowledge is often present at different levels of formalization-ranging from text documents to explicit rules. In this paper, we describe the knowledge formalization continuum as a metaphor to help domain specialists during the knowledge acquisition phase. To make use of the knowledge formalization continuum, the agile use of knowledge representations within a knowledge engineering project is proposed, as well as transitions between the different representations, when required. We show that a semantic wiki is a flexible tool for engineering knowledge on the knowledge formalization continuum. Case studies are taken from one industrial and one academic project, and they illustrate the applicability and benefits of semantic wikis in combination with the knowledge formalization continuum.

Abstract. The use of semantic representations in document-oriented environments -as formal annotations or embedded instances of a formal knowledge base -is seen as an enabling technology for intelligent services which may help knowledge workers in tasks like finding, structuring, or assessing information. Also, a high level of formalization has potential to directly support problem solving, e.g., by the application of inferencing services. A coupling of textual and formal representations in documentcentered knowledge work raises, amongst others, two questions: i) How can the acquisition of formal knowledge in such an environment be facilitated? ii) How can the potential complexity of formal annotations during a document's life and use cycle be adequately handled?We present the Mymory workbench as an approach to investigate and tackle these challenges. Mymory is based on a semantic wiki system and supports manual as well as automated annotations of wiki documents. These annotations can be framed by automatically obtained models of the user's work context, establishing situation-oriented structuring of annotations which can be exploited in semantic search and adapted document presentation.

Software modernization remains a difficult, highly intellectual, labor-intensive, collaborative, and risky undertaking involving software engineers interacting in knowledge-centric processes. While many tools and several methodologies are available, current modernization projects lack adequate automated and systematic operational process support. This chapter provides an introduction to the topic of automated process and knowledge assistance for software modernization, giving background information on related work in this area, and then expounds on various problems. To address these, a holistic solution approach and guidance framework called the Context-aware Software Engineering Environment Event-driven framework (CoSEEEK) is described, which can support developers on software modernization projects, addressing such aspects as process dynamicity, extrinsic processes, process exception handling, coordination, quality assurance, and knowledge provisioning. Subsequently, future research directions are discussed and a conclusion is drawn.
