“…As MRI revealed a lesion compatible with pituitary macroadenoma, at first, the plasmacytoma was not suspected, and the presumptive diagnosis of nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma was established. By analyzing similarly published data from literature, it has been estimated that only a small proportion of patients diagnosed with intrasellar tumors, including our patient, had a primary intrasellar plasmacytoma (3,8,12). As previously reported, approximately 50% of cases of plasmacytoma without evidence of multiple myeloma at the diagnosis progress to overt multiple myeloma within 10 years, and 10% of them recur with a plasmacytoma (13), thereby underlining the importance of a correct and timely diagnosis in the management of these patients.…”

“…The most common age of patients at diagnosis is, on average, 60 years. Uncommon hormonal abnormalities may be present, among which hyperprolactinemia and sexhormone imbalance are the most frequent (8), although in many cases, as in our patient, anterior pituitary function is not compromised.…”

“…12 Like in our case the LPM does not have typical imaging features of a meningioma so it can mimic intracranial inflammatory condition or brain neoplasm. Intracranial plasma cell granulomas 13, 14 and dural plasmacytoma 15,16 are often confused with meningiomas at the radiographic level. Moreover, inflammatory pseudo tumors, inflammatory fibrous histiocytomas, lymphomatoid granulomatosis and sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy are also considered in the differential diagnosis.…”

“…Plasmacytomas of the sellar region were first reported in 1970 by postmortem pathologic diagnosis, an observation that predates a case from 1977 that was previously attributed as the first. 1 They are rare tumors localized on the sellar region arising from plasma cells. 2 It is believed that the entity originates from the surrounding mucosa of the sellar region and clivus, which can be locally aggressive.…”
