Self-Testing of Vaginal pH to Prevent Preterm Delivery

Abstract

This trial did not demonstrate the efficacy of self-testing of vaginal pH for the prevention of preterm delivery (< 37 weeks of gestation).

Recent management practices for premature labour have focused on identifying and treating high-risk populations; however, confusion regarding the efficacy and safety of tocolytic agents has resulted in the prospects for long-term prolongation of pregnancy in preterm labour cases being disappointing.…”

In a subsequent nation-wide pilot project sponsored by German statutory health-insurance carriers, a significantly reduced frequency of birth weight under 1500 g was demonstrated (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.66-0.95), but due to considerable methodological deficiencies, these results cannot be generalized (11).…”
