“…The reaction of cis ‐[Pd(tmeda)(NO 3 ) 2 ] with L in a ratio of 1:1 is a suitable stoichiometry for the preparation of a mononuclear self‐assembled complex with a large chelate ring. In the mononuclear complex, the terminal pyridine nitrogen lone pairs are expected to participate in metal–ligand bond formation.…”

“…The precipitation method was used to isolate the desired products, through the addition of excess EtOAc. Although the “spiro”‐type mononuclear product [Pd( L ) 2 ](NO 3 ) 2 ( 3a ) was isolated from the reaction carried out with a 1:2 ratio of metal to ligand (Scheme , a), the “double‐decker”‐type trinuclear product [Pd 3 ( L ) 4 ](NO 3 ) 6 ( 4a ) was formed with a 3:4 ratio of the reagents (Scheme , b). Thus, in this latter case the internal pyridine participates in the reaction of L with Pd(NO 3 ) 2 to give the very symmetrical double‐decker cage‐like architecture 4a (Scheme ).…”

“…First, the overall topology of the metallo‐loop, defined in part by the naphthalene moiety collapsing onto the coordination unit, may block intercalation into duplex DNA, thereby affording the relatively good selectivity for G4 over duplex DNA, an observation that was also independently confirmed by a competition assay between F21T and an unlabelled ds26 hairpin duplex (Figure ; little loss of selectivity even in the presence of 250 equivalents of duplex architecture relative to G4). This contrasts sharply with the duplex‐binding behaviour of the partially planar palladium(II) metallo‐loops developed by Chand and coworkers, which offer similar interaction sites within their coordination units (electro‐deficient pyridine chelates connected via ethylene oxide units across from an ancillary 6,6’‐bipyridine or phenanthroline unit) incorporated into very different overall topologies …”
