Selection of vinasse degrading microorganisms

Abstract: Vinasse is a highly colored effluent with a high pollutant potential when disposed in the environment. Assays for decolorization of vinasse were performed, selecting the fungus Pleurotus sajor-caju CCB 020. The discoloration was cocominant with the increase of the activities of laccase, manganese-peroxidase and peroxidases. P. sajor-caju demonstrated a rise in biomass production (1.06 g 100 ml -1 ), and the enzyme activities such as laccase (varying from 400 to 450 IU l -1 ) reached between the 9th and 10th da… Show more

“…After the period of maximum growth the system got into a phase of reduction in the rate of biomass production (characterized as stationary phase), in which secondary metabolism is activated, resulting in the production of bioactive compounds such as phenol oxidative enzymes. Ferreira et al (2010) states that nutritional stress may be one of the responsible factors for MnP synthesis, explaining why this enzyme expression was observed only after the 15 th day (Figure 1). …”

“…The anthropogenic intervention in the environment has revealed the performance of microorganisms in the pursuit of adaptation, when faced with damaging agents, thus becoming a powerful tool for environmental protection that can be further enhanced (Ferreira et al 2010). Industrial effluents represent a source of environmental pollution of rivers, lakes and seas, and it can affect the water quality and the microbial and aquatic flora (Kanu & Achi 2011).…”

“…Between 8 and 15 L of vinasse is produced for each litre of alcohol manufactured (Ferreira et al 2010). It has a dark-brownish colour and is also rich in nutrients.…”
