Abstract: Crude glycerol is an ideal feedstock for bioproduction of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) while pure culture always shows low substrate tolerance and limited productivity. In this study, an anaerobic microbial consortium for conversion of crude glycerol was selected and its 1,3-PDO production capacity was evaluated. The consortium was obtained from anaerobic activated sludge by 19 serial transfers and mainly consisted of 94.64% Clostridiaceae and 4.47% Peptostreptococcaceae. The consortium adapted well with high gly… Show more

“…The other crude glycerol is from hydrolysis of raw vegetable oils (named by GHVO). The quality and origin of the GHVO was described by Zhou et al (2017). The glycerol concentration presented in this study stood for the absolute glycerol content of medium without regard to impurities.…”

“…In order to increase the efficiency of raw glycerol conversion appropriately, LA, as a meritorious product from oxidative branch, is acceptable (Xin et al, 2017). Natural microorganism species, which possess the ability to produce 1,3-PDO from glycerol, involve Klebsiella, Clostridium, Enterobacter, Citrobacter , and Lactobacillus (Saxena et al, 2009; Celinska et al, 2014; Zhou et al, 2017). Among them, Klebsiella pneumoniae (Yang et al, 2016; Xin et al, 2017) and Clostridium butyricum (Dams et al, 2016; Zhou et al, 2017) get more attention considering their high productivity and concentration of 1,3-PDO.…”

“…In these cases, understanding the roles of structure in biofilm function will allow the development of tailored biofilms with structure optimized for a particular function. This is especially likely to be important for cases where microbial consortia -ecosystems of more than one microbial species -are needed to produce the desired function [36][37][38][39][40].…”
