“…Although there are a number of reports of seed predation in Hedysareae such as Onobrychis (Jermy & Szentesi 2003;Delobel & Delobel 2006), such studies are rather limited in the case of the Hedysarum genus. There are some reports in the scientific literature about predators of Hedysarum species; for example, Acanthoscelides beetle (the largest in the beetle subfamily Bruchinae) as a seed predator of Hedysarum boreale (Cane et al 2013) and Paleoacanthoscelides gilvus as a seed predator of H. spinosissimum, H. coronarium and H. flexuosum (Hoffmann 1945;Delobel & Delobel 2006). For the first time, we observed Bruchidius koenigi as the seed predator of H. criniferum.…”

“…However, it is normal in many cases that some and not all of a seed crop is consumed by seed predators (Auld ; Szentesi ; Cane et al . ).There is also sometimes evidence indicating that the impact of seed predators on plant populations has been slight (Andersen ; Myers & Bazely ).This is almost the same for our case of H. criniferum , for which there are still enough seeds for normal regeneration, even though 27% of the seeds are consumed by seed predators.…”

“…Weeds were controlled primarily with cultivation and hand rouging. Harvested seed pods of D. ornata, D. searlsiae, and A. filipes were extensively damaged from feeding by seed beetles in 2013 (Cane et al, 2013). Damage was observed in 2014, but to a lesser degree than in 2013.…”
