Secondary prophylaxis decision‐making in venous thromboembolism: interviews on clinical practice in thirteen countries

Abstract: Essentials Thrombosis experts still struggle to reach consensus regarding the optimal type, dosage and duration of treatment. We asked 13 leaders in the field to comment on the prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in their respective countries.Universally relevant risk factors as well as area‐specific barriers to adequate treatment are identified.Local guidelines may be beneficial to guide decision‐making in areas where universal guidelines fall short. ObjectivesSecondary prevention of venous thromboembo… Show more

“…Since the 2008 edition, indefinite treatment is recommended for unprovoked VTE in the ACCP guidelines [3,28]. Recently, Ten Cate and Prins assessed geographical differences in guideline adherence in secondary prevention of VTE by performing interviews with senior-level physicians [29]. In addition to international guidelines and local guidelines based thereon, area-specific features were of influence on actual VTE treatment, including, among others, financial aspects, comorbidities, genetic profile and access to health care [29].…”

“…Given the substantial volume of EVTA procedures performed globally and the potential for severe complications, it is imperative for healthcare providers to have a clear understanding of the true incidence of VTE complications [7,8]. Such insights can aid in individual patient decision-making and facilitate research on VTE prevention strategies [9,10].…”

“…Given the substantial volume of EVTA procedures performed globally and the potential for severe complications, it is imperative for healthcare providers to have a clear understanding of the true incidence of VTE complications [7, 8]. Such insights can aid in individual patient decision-making and facilitate research on VTE prevention strategies [9, 10]. To address these concerns, we have developed machine learning models to predict the 30-day procedure-related risk of DVT in patients undergoing lower extremity endovascular thermal ablation [11].…”
