Second mesiobuccal canal detection in maxillary first molars using microscopy and ultrasonics

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of operating microscope in combination with ultrasonics increased the rate of second mesiobuccal (MB2) canal detection in permanent maxillary first molar teeth. A hundred extracted human maxillary first molars were assessed. After location of the main canals, the MB2 canal was sought in all teeth first without microscopy, then with the aid of the operating microscope and finally with the combined use of the operating microscope and ultrasonics. With thes… Show more

“…The clinician has a responsibility to identify additional canals particularly in maxillary molars, and the utmost care should be taken in recognizing and treating these extra canals. By using modern diagnostic technologies such as, dental operating microscopes, magnification loupes, ultrasonic tips and CBCT, detection of additional canals has become much easier (Alaçam et al;Kottoor et al, 2011).…”

“…However, detection of the orifice of the additional canals in the mesiobuccal root is often difficult because it is generally covered by a ledge of dentin (Das et al, 2015). To eliminate the obstruction, most endodontists trough with round slow speed burs (Ferguson et al, 2005;Garg et al, 2010) or an ultrasonic tip (Alaçam et al, 2008;Kottoor et al, 2011).…”

“…Os resultados obtidos no presente estudo, quando comparados com a literatura científica [6][7][8] , apresentaram baixa frequência de constatação do quarto canal. Isso pode ser explicado pela ausência de meios auxiliares na prática clínica que contribuam na procura pelo quarto canal e também pela diferença no delineamento dos estudos.…”
