Seasonal variation of meteorological factors on air parameters and the impact of gas flaring on air quality of some cities in Niger Delta (Ibeno and its environs)

Abstract: The impacts of gas flaring on meteorological factors at Ibeno, Eket, Onna, Esit Eket and Umudike-Nigeria were investigated by measuring air quality parameters. The results show that the mean concentration of air parameters value were below Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA) and United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) National air quality standards with exception of carbon monoxide which exceeded the limit of 35 ppm in March at Ibeno. Concentration of air parameters at Umudike showed a… Show more

“…However, the economic growth over the region drives up anthropogenic emissions. There are increases in industries, including gas flaring (Asuoha and Osu, 2015); local fuel-wood burning for stoves; and traffic Hadji et al, 2012;Liousse et al, 2014). Moreover, the increase in two-wheel vehicles, using very poor quality fuel is suspected to quickly worsen air quality (Ndoke and Jimoh, 2005;.…”

“…The dry season concentrations of pollutants were considerably higher than the rainy season concentrations and the noise pollution levels were very high too. Asuoha and Osu (2015) investigated the seasonal variation of meteorological factors and the impacts of gas flaring on air quality in the Delta Niger area(Ibeno,Onaa,Esit Eket and Umudike) and discovered a strong positive correlation between air quality parameters(Cl-,SPM and SO2) and meteorological factors(vapour pressure, relative humidity, temperature and precipitation) in the area. Asubiojo (2016) and Taiwo et al (2015) enumerated the major sources of pollution in Nigeria as natural (e.g.…”

“…The interaction between air pollution and climate in major population centers is a challenging field of research (Baklanov et al, 2016). In the countries of the Guinean Gulf, the population has been growing rapidly during the last decades, accompanied by economic development.…”
