Seasonal Variation in Trypanosomosis Rates in Small Ruminants at the Kaduna Abattoir, Nigeria

Abstract: Seasonal variation in trypanosome parasitological infection rates in small ruminants was studied at the Kaduna Central abattoir, North Central Nigeria. Blood samples were obtained at slaughter from 320 goats and 209 sheep during the dry and rainy seasons and examined using the Haematocrit Centrifugation Technique, Buffy coat method and Giemsa stained blood smears. The packed cell volume of the animals were also obtained. The over all trypanosome infection rate in all small ruminants was 2.10%. Infection rates … Show more

“…The seeming high prevalence of haemoparasites in females than in the males could be related to the proportion of the populations sampled. This corroborates the findings of Samdi et al [13]. Most households keep females than males especially for breeding purposes.…”

“…This could be attributed to the dry weather conditions allowing free roaming and spread of diseases in animals. However, this was in contrast with the findings of Samdi et al [13], who observed high prevalence of haemoparasites during rainy season. The relativesly low prevalence of haemoparasites in the months of June, July and August could be attributed to the rainy weather conditions apparently not suitable for spread of vector transmitted disease.…”

“…Ces résultats ne corroborent pas ceux obtenus par Farougou et al (2007). Par contre, ils sont en accord avec ceux obtenus par Samdi et al (2008) à Kaduna au Nigéria. En effet, l'intensité de l'infestation par les hémoparasites à tiques est généralement basse en saison sèche et élevée en saison de pluie (Jongejan, 1994).…”

“…Both Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma vivax are pathogenic to the local cattle with variable clinical manifestations, depending on the nutritional status of the affected animal (7,8). Previous reports in Nigeria showed that infections in small ruminants with these parasites are higher during the rainy season than the dry season (9). They are transmitted cyclically by tsetse fly (Glossina species).…”
