Seasonal Rainfall Variability in Ethiopia and Its Long-Term Link to Global Sea Surface Temperatures

Abstract: Investigating the influence of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) on seasonal rainfall is a crucial factor for managing Ethiopian water resources. For this purpose, SST and rainfall data were used to study a wide range of inhomogeneous areas in Ethiopia with uneven distribution of rainfall for both summer and spring seasons. Firstly, a preliminary subdivision of rainfall grid points into zones was applied depending on spatial homogeneity and seasonality of rainfall. This introduced new clusters, including nine … Show more

“…It is the short rainy season in the area. Whereas, Bega (the dry-spell) is characterized by sunny, dry and cold weather condition with occasional falls prevailed over much of the country [ 5 , 14 ]. As the present study area lies at the southern portions of Ethiopia, it benefited from a bimodal rainfall season with long periods during Belg and short rains from September to October [ 5 ].…”

“…Autumn (March-June) is the long rainy season while spring (September-November) is short and erratic rainfall period. Winter (December-February) is the driest season of the year and spring (June-August) is moderately dried period between the long rainy season (autumn) and the short rainy season (spring) in east Guji zone (Abate, 2016;Alhamshry et al, 2019;NMA, 2015).…”

“…Precipitation variability is highly determined by global sea-surface temperature (SST) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The SST is among the major drivers of precipitation variability (Dittus et al, 2018), particularly for the Ethiopian precipitation (Alhamshry et al, 2020). Besides, the ENSO is the other most important determinant of precipitation variability, particularly in the precipitation pattern of Ethiopia (Kasie et al, 2019& Tefera et al, 2020.…”
