Abstract.Remote sensing was applied for the collection of spatio-temporal data to increase our understanding of the potential distribution of the kala-azar vector Phlebotomus argentipes in endemic areas of the Vaishali district of Bihar, India. We produced monthly distribution maps of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) based on data from the thematic mapper (TM) sensor onboard the Landsat-5 satellite. Minimum, maximum and mean NDVI values were computed for each month and compared with the concurrent incidence of kala-azar and the vector density. Maximum and mean NDVI values (R 2 = 0.55 and R 2 = 0.60, respectively), as well as the season likelihood ratio (X 2 = 17.51; P <0.001), were found to be strongly associated with kala-azar, while the correlation with between minimum NDVI values and kala-azar was weak (R 2 = 0.25). Additionally, a strong association was found between the mean and maximum NDVI values with seasonal vector abundance (R 2 = 0.60 and R 2 = 0.55, respectively) but there was only a marginal association between minimum NDVI value and the spatial distribution of kala-azar vis-à-vis P. argentipes density.

DDT-based indoor residual spraying suboptimal for visceral leishmaniasis elimination in India

Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is used to control visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in India, but it is poorly quality assured. Quality assurance was performed in eight VL endemic districts in Bihar State, India, in 2014. Residual dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was sampled from walls using Bostik tape discs, and DDT concentrations [grams of active ingredient per square meter (g ai/m 2 )] were determined using HPLC. Pre-IRS surveys were performed in three districts, and post-IRS surveys were performed in eight districts. A 20% threshold above and below the target spray of 1.0 g ai/m 2 was defined as "in range." The entomological assessments were made in four districts in IRS and non-IRS villages. Vector densities were measured: pre-IRS and 1 and 3 mo post-IRS. Insecticide susceptibility to 4% DDT and 0.05% deltamethrin WHO-impregnated papers was determined with wild-caught sand flies. The majority (329 of 360, 91.3%) of pre-IRS samples had residual DDT concentrations of <0.1 g ai/m 2 . The mean residual concentration of DDT post-IRS was 0.37 g ai/m 2 ; 84.9% of walls were undersprayed, 7.4% were sprayed in range, and 7.6% were oversprayed. The abundance of sand flies in IRS and non-IRS villages was significantly different at 1 mo post-IRS only. Sand flies were highly resistant to DDT but susceptible to deltamethrin. The Stockholm Convention, ratified by India in 2006, calls for the complete phasing out of DDT as soon as practical, with limited use in the interim where no viable IRS alternatives exist. Given the poor quality of the DDT-based IRS, ready availability of pyrethroids, and susceptibility profile of Indian sand flies, the continued use of DDT in this IRS program is questionable.leishmaniasis | elimination |

Leishmaniasis is a public health and veterinary hazard. Screening of serum samples of 384 human and 387 domestic animals were carried out by indirect hemagglutination assay (IHAT) to detect antibodies against L. donovani and to see the involvement of animal reservoirs in Najran region, Saudi Arabia. The overall prevalence of human Leishmaniasis infection in Najran area, Saudi Arabia was 8.3%. The prevalence rate of human Leishmaniasis was Journal of Biology and Life ScienceISSN 2157-6076 2017, Vol. 8, No. 1 60 significantly higher in summer (21.9 %) and spring (8.3%) than in winter and autumn. In addition, the prevalence rate of human Leishmaniasis was significantly higher in old age (17.6%) and young period (7.3%). Out of 53 females and 331 males, 3 (5.7%) females and 29 (8.8%) males were found to be infected with human Leishmaniasis, respectively. The highest titer in human was 1/256 with percentage of 43.8%. Antibody against L. donovani in domestic animals was detected and the overall proportion of occurrence was 1.6%. The prevalence rate of Leishmaniasis infection was significantly higher in goats than in sheep, camel and horses. The highest titer (1/512) was in goats. The study was thrown light on infected African and Asian workers as source of Leishmaniasis infection. Also, this study suggests the possibility of varied species of domestic animals to harbor the parasite and hence play a central role in the transmission. Consequently, this may hurdle our clarification of disease epidemiology.
