The variability of chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) in the open South China Sea (SCS) was examined using observations from two Bio‐Argo floats. During the period of September 2014 to August 2015, there was a permanent subsurface Chl a maximum (SCM) in the depth range of 48 to 96 m in the central basin of the SCS. In the northern basin, the SCM disappeared in winter, replaced by enhanced surface layer phytoplankton with high Chl a. The values of the SCM were influenced by the vertical displacement of isotherms. Strong wind forcing and surface cooling were the main physical drivers of high surface Chl a in winter. In the north, stronger wind than in the center, lower sea surface temperature (SST) than in the center, and Kuroshio water intrusion were more favorable for the upward transport of nutrient‐rich deep water. A large amount of nitrate could be advected from the Taiwan Strait and shallow continental shelf to the northern basin in winter. A combination of strong wind mixing, surface cooling, Kuroshio water intrusion, and horizontal advection caused the winter surface phytoplankton bloom in the north.

Classification of suspended particles characterizes the composition of seawater, which helps the interpretation of remote sensing data and promotes the researches of the matter exchanges in ocean processes. In this article, an in situ prototype based on polarized light scattering is introduced, and its ability to classify the suspended particles is demonstrated. The experimental results show that the prototype can classify the sediments, microplastics, and phytoplankton in seawater with an accuracy larger than 85%, and further calculate their relative proportion in water. In the summer and winter of 2020, the prototype was deployed three times in Daya Bay and lasted for dozens of hours each time, along with the additional commercial sensors, that is, Environment X Observation (EXO) and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The chlorophyll content measured by EXO and the acoustic backscatter intensity measured by ADCP are respectively related to the number of algal cells and sediments in the water, which helps to interpret the data of the prototype. The results of field data show that the prototype can effectively classify phytoplankton and sediment particles in seawater and monitor their temporal variations. Besides, the retrieved information of the suspended particles is consistent with the analysis from the flow dynamics and season variations in Daya Bay. These results indicate the ability of this prototype to classify the suspended particles in seawater, which promises its potential contribution to particulate oceanography in the future.

Analysis of surface chlorophyll a associated with sea surface temperature and surface wind in the South China Sea

In this study, the spatial and temporal variability in surface chlorophyll a (Chl-a) in the whole South China Sea (SCS) was investigated in detail by using 8-day, 4-km, gap-free MODIS-A data (2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016). Monthly climatology and empiricalorthogonal-functions analysis of Chl-a were performed in association with sea surface temperature and surface wind to aid in better understanding the physical mechanisms responsible for the Chl-a variability. The results are as follows: (1) Chl-a has out-of-phase variability between the coastal and open-sea regions due to different major factors controlling phytoplankton growth in each region; (2) in particular, Chl-a increases in the northern SCS during winter and in the western and southwestern SCS during summer mainly due to the effects of monsoons and orography; and (3) wind-driven coastal upwelling is stronger in the western SCS than in the eastern SCS. A wind-induced coastal upwelling not reported in the literature was detected along Palawan Island (8-12 • N, 117-120 • E) during winter. In the SCS, the Chl-a variability is influenced by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation with a time lag of 4-9 months, depending on the variability scales.
