Abstract: Aiming to evaluate the potential of Passerine birds as bioindicators of forest fragmentation, we studied the avifauna in the mountain region of the state of Rio de Janeiro by mist-netting between 2001 and 2005. We sampled six sites, including four small fragments (from 4 to 64 ha) in an agricultural area (Teresópolis), one second-growth forest (440 haMiguel Pereira) and a continuous forest (10,600 ha, Serra dos Órgãos National Park -SONP). Indicator Species analysis and a Monte Carlo test were run to detect as… Show more

“…Ribon et al (2003) também classificam M. loricata como criticamente ameaçada em um minucioso estudo sobre a avifauna da região de Viçosa, na Zona da Mata Mineira, onde a espécie foi observada em apenas um dos 43 fragmentos florestais estudados não maiores do que 384 ha. Em áreas montanhosas do Rio de Janeiro, Piratelli et al (2008) registraram a espécie somente em um fragmento de 440 ha.…”

“…Only 26 species (see Table 1) are resident (FO values higher than 75%, according to Almeida et al, 1999) to the studied areas and ten of them occur in both fragments. Turdus leucomelas, Pitangus sulphuratus, Patagioenas picazuro, Cyclarhis gujanesis and Zonotrichia capensis can be included in this group because they are species adapted to disturbed registered species (Chiroxiphia caudata and Habia rubica) are bioindicators (Piratelli et al, 2008). According to these authors, both species have some ecological characteristics (e.g.…”

“…In that sense, bird inventories are commonly used for this purpose (Vielliard, 2000;Marini, 2001;Antunes, 2005;Piratelli et al, 2008). Conservation strategies of natural areas require knowledge on the distribution and abundance of species, and studies on bird communities can provide suitable data (Naeve et al, 1996).…”
