SCULPTEUR: Towards a New Paradigm for Multimedia Museum Information Handling

Abstract: Abstract. This paper describes the design and prototype implementation of a novel architecture for integrated concept, metadata and content based browsing and retrieval of museum information. The work is part of a European project involving several major galleries and the aim is to provide more versatile access to digital collections of museum artefacts, including 2-D images, 3-D models and other multimedia representations. An ontology for the museum domain, based on the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model, is be… Show more

“…A quite different use of ontologies for multimedia services can be found in [20]. In the SCULPTEUR project, a multimedia information system in a digital museum was developed, in which OWL-based ontologies are used as enabling technology for advanced concept-, metadata-, and content browsing and -retrieval functionality.…”

“…In the Artiste [10] and SCULPTEUR [11] projects contentbased image retrieval was based around VIPS functions. These produced small feature vector files including histograms, CCVs, PWTs etc., which were later, compared to give match scores.…”

“…In [13] an approach is presented, where ontologies are serving as integrating technology for advanced concept, metadata, and content browsing and retrieval in the domain of digital museum information. In this work, a domain ontology and a semantic layer with references to the actual objects of the digital collection like 2-D or 3-D images and models was developed.…”
