The aim of this study was focused on the antibacterial activity of endophytic fungi from leaf, bark and root of mangrove Sonneratia grifithii Kurz, collected from Bungus, West Sumatra. Isolation of endophytic fungi was based on direct planting method with sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) as growth medium. Twelve isolates fungi strains were obtained from this mangrove. They were cultivated on sabouraud dextrose broth (SDB) for 4 weeks and they are fractioned using ethyl acetate and butanol. Ethyl acetate and butanol extracts were analyzed for antibacterial activity. The fungi strains which showed the maximum activity were identified by macroscopic and microscopic examination. Twelve (50%) extracts of endophyte fungi strains were able to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria such as, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Endophytic fungi strains that have higher antibacterial activity derived from the root than from leave and bark Sonneratia griffithii Kurz. This work concluded that endophytic fungi strains of Sonneratia griffithii Kurz can be developed as a new source of antibiotic compounds.

Endophytic bacteria producing antibacterial against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in seagrass from Rote Ndao, East Nusa Tenggara,. Methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are bacteria that resistant to the various type of antibiotics and yet cannot be handled comprehensively. The discovery of new antibiotic from endophytic bacteria in seagrass of Rote Island is an option to overcome the resistance. The aims of this research were to screen endophytic bacteria inhibit MRSA from seagrass, to determine the species of the endophytic bacteria and the genetic relationship. Isolation of endophytic bacteria has carried out by inoculating surface sterilization seagrass leaves on Marine Agar (MA) medium. Selection of potential endophytic bacteria-producing anti-MRSA has done using overlay method against MRSA, gram-positive Bacillus subtilis, and gram-negative Escherichia coli. Identification of the endophytic bacteria based on the sequence of 16S rRNA encoding gene. The results showed that there were eight isolates of endophytic bacteria which have antibacterial activity against MRSA of seagrass Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, and Cymodocea rotundata in the Litianak and Oeseli Beaches, Rote Ndao. The diameter of inhibition zone was between 0.65-18.27 mm with narrow spectrum with broad spectrum antibacterial activity. The eight potential endophytic bacteria identity were Bacillaceae E2M1, Bacillaceae E2M3, Bacillus E2M4, Bacillus E2M7, Bacillaceae E2M8, Pseudomonadaceae C1M7, Shewanellaceae C2M3, and Rhodobacteraceae T1M3. Most of the isolates can be said to be a new species as the percent similarity of 16S rRNA gene sequence was less than 95% and promising to produce new antibacterial compounds. Phylogenetic relationship showed some isolates clustering in different groups that present the diverse groups of endophytic bacteria were found.

This research was conducted to determine physical quality, the nutritional quality and characteristics of antimicrobial compounds from fermented oil palm fronds (FOPF). This research was carried out using a Complete Randomized Design with 4 treatments and 4 replications. The following treatments were performed by the addition of different additives namely: 10% poultry manure, 10% cow feces, 5% urea and 5% molasses. All treatments were extracted in stages using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol. The observed parameters were physical quality (pH, aroma, color, and texture), nutritional quality (neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin), yield of extract, class of bioactive compounds and the antimicrobial activity test of extracted compounds. The data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance and differences between treatments were tested using Duncan's multiple range test. The addition of different additives has a very significant effect (P < 0.01) on the lignin content; significant effect (P < 0.05) on pH, aroma, color and texture; and no effect on the content of NDF, ADF, hemicellulose and cellulose. The highest yield of extract was obtained from methanol extract with the addition of poultry manure. The methanol extract on the addition of poultry manure and urea were identified as compounds in the steroid, tannin and phenolic classes. The highest antimicrobial activity test against Escherichia coli (12.83 mm) was obtained from FOPF extract (1%) with addition of poultry manure, while highest antimicrobial activity test against Staphylococcus aureus (11.67 mm) was obtained from FOPF extract (4%) with addition of molasses. The conclusion of this research was FOPF with addition of poultry manure provides good physical quality, nutritional quality and can inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus at a concentration of 1%.
