Screening of biofilm formation by beneficial vaginal lactobacilli and influence of culture media components

Abstract: Aims: To assess the ability of vaginal lactobacilli to form biofilm under different culture conditions and to determine the relationship between their growth and the capability of biofilm formation by selected strains. Methods and Results: Fifteen Lactobacillus strains from human vagina were tested for biofilm formation by crystal violet staining. Only Lactobacillus rhamnosus Centro de Referencia para Lactobacilos Culture Collection (CRL) 1332, Lact. reuteri CRL 1324 and Lact. delbrueckii CRL 1510 were able to… Show more

“…3). A similar production of biofilms by lactobacilli from various sources was observed by T e r r a f et al [43] and S l í ž o v á et al [42]. However, these authors pointed out that there are significant differences in the production of biofilms related to the composition of the medium and cultivation conditions.…”

“…Only limited studies have yet assessed the potential of vaginal lactobacilli to form biofilms in vitro. These studies indicate that the biofilm-forming capacity of vaginal lactobacilli is strongly influenced by growth media (51,52), although this ability has not yet been attributed to specific molecules. Interestingly, the observation of this study that the srtA mutant of L. plantarum CMPG5300 lost the capacity to form biofilm on polystyrene indicates that biofilm formation in some vaginal lactobacilli could be by virtue of sortase-dependent targeting of cell wall proteins.…”

“…[11]. Установлено, что способность лактобацилл к формированию биопленок зависит от свойств штам-ма, его концентрации, а также физико-химических свойств среды [12,13]. Более двух десятилетий назад выявили, что лактобациллы прямой кишки являют-ся источником колонизации влагалища [14], и этот факт был подтвержден более поздними исследова-ниями [15,16].…”
