Screening for Polypropylene Degradation Potential of Bacteria Isolated from Mangrove Ecosystems in Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: Polypropylene (PP) is a versatile polymer that is widely used globally and plays an important role in many commercial applications. Its recalcitrance to degradation by microorganisms makes it persist in the environment, causing environmental pollution. In the present studies, Bacillus cereus and Sporosarcina globispora isolated from mangrove sediments in Peninsular Malaysia were screened for ability to degrade polypropylene using mineral salt media. The bacteria isolates were able to grow on media infused with… Show more

“…by changing color of microplastics as agreed earlier byHemjinda et al (2007) Okpokwasili and Nweke (2005). stated that the increasing bacterial concentration, and modifying the combination of bacterial isolates could significantly inducing the polymer degradation. The degradation of PE by bacterial isolates may extent up to certain limits and it depends on their binding efficiency in to the plastics(Helen et al 2017a). While individual approach, the highest polypropylene degradationwas observed in the B. paramycoides than the B. cereus and this results were contrast with Helen et al (2017a, b) who made attempt on polypropylene degradation by B. cereus and S. globispora and obtained highest degradation by B. cereus than the S. globispora.…”
