Scattered Pilot-Based Channel Estimation for Channel Adaptive FBMC-OQAM Systems

Abstract: Abstract-Shaping the pulse of FilterBank MultiCarrier with Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation subcarrier modulation (FBMC-OQAM) systems offers a new degree of freedom for the design of mobile communication systems. In previous studies, we evaluated the gains arising from the application of Prototype Filter Functions (PFFs) and subcarrier spacing matched to the delay and Doppler spreads of doubly dispersive channels. In this paper, we investigate the impact of having imperfect channel knowledge at the recei… Show more

“…7 This is only valid for the PHYDYAS filter. There are other prototype filter functions in discussion for OFDM/OQAM systems which may require a different value for β [34]. 8 It is worth emphasizing that the CRB derived in this section is based on the approximation of Gaussian distribution for the data interference term ζ d k,n ; hence, it provides a benchmark for the performance of the estimators developed on such an assumption.…”

“…The term γ (18), known as ambiguity function [34], characterizes the level of the 'intrinsic interference' of the n th real input sample from the k th subband, d k ,n , on the nth output sample from the kth subband, through the lth channel tap, h [ l], in the presence of CFO, μ 0 , and STO, τ 0 . In the special case l = μ 0 = τ 0 = 0, the quantity γ k ,n k,n (0, 0, 0) describes the level of complex orthogonality of the analysis/synthesis filters of the OFDM/OQAM transceiver system up to a multiplicative factor θ k ,n θ * k,n .…”

“…According to [8] and [14], the maximum values of interference weights are for , , ,    and  respectively. So we send pseudo pilots in the position of  and  ; and they have the maximum weights and the interference weight pattern will be: 0 0…”

“…Channel estimation (CE) methods of FBMC attract numerous researches, especially in multipath fading channels [10]. FBMC CE methods include preamble-based [11]- [13] and scattered pilotsbased techniques [11], [14], and [15] techniques. The former ones are supposed to cancel the undesired interference, like interference cancellation method (ICM) or effectively exploiting it to improve the estimation performance, like interference approximation method (IAM) [12].…”

“…If it was chosen to be larger, the system would be more sensitive to time selectivity and less to frequency selectivity. The authors in [24], [40] provide a detailed performance analysis on the choice of the symbol duration as a function of the channel delay and Doppler spread.…”
