Bambusoideae is a diverse subfamily that includes herbaceous (Olyreae) and woody (Arundinarieae and Bambuseae) bamboos. Species within Bambusae are particularly difficult to identify due to their monocarpic lifecycle and the often long durations between mass flowering events; whereas the herbaceous bamboos are pluricarpic, but often are found with no reproductive structures. The leaf blade anatomy of 16 sympatric species of native Brazilian bamboos (Olyreae and Bambuseae) from the Atlantic Rainforest was studied in order to detect useful features for their identification. All the studied species share the following features: epidermis with a single stratum of cells; adaxial bulliform cells; mesophyll with arm cells, rosette cells, and fusoid cells; and collateral vascular bundles. Herbaceous bamboos share two features: papillae scattered on the abaxial surface and parallel-sided arrays of bulliform cells; whereas woody bamboos share: centrally organized papillae and fan-shaped arrays of bulliform cells. Also within the woody bamboos, intercostal fibers and a midrib with only one vascular bundle (simple midrib) characterize the subtribe Arthrostylidiinae; whereas a midrib with more than one vascular bundle (complex midrib) and a stomatal apparatus with two pappilae per subsidiary cell characterize the subtribe Chusqueinae. There are also diagnostic features for the sampled species, such as: papillae shape, and the outline and structure of the midrib. Bambus lignificados geralmente apresentam dificuldades de delimitação e identificação, devido principalmente ao ciclo monocárpico e longa amplitude temporal entre florações; enquanto que bambus herbáceos possuem ciclo pluricárpico, porém frequentemente são encontrados em estágio vegetativo. Foi estudada a anatomia da lâmina foliar de 16 espécies de Bambusoideae (Olyreae e Bambuseae), simpátricas e nativas do Brasil, visando levantar caracteres úteis para sua identificação. Todos os táxons estudados compartilham: epiderme uniestratificada; células buliformes na face adaxial; mesofilo com células invaginantes, células em roseta e células fusoides; e feixes vasculares colaterais. Bambus herbáceos compartilham: papilas dispersas na face abaxial e grupos de células buliformes organizadas paralelamente; enquanto que bambos lignificados compartilham: papilas organizadas em colunas centrais e grupos de células buliformes em forma de leque. Species of Bambusa had widespread in Celebes, especially for Bambusa striata and Bambusa vulgaris. As an effect of the lacking of flowering, species identification mainly depends on leaf epidermal micromorphology, and vegetative features have proven to be useful in bamboo taxonomy. The objective of this research was to describe the classification of Bambusa from Celebes based on the micromorphological characters of leaf epidermis. The specimens were collected from the wild population. The samples of leaf were collected from five members of Bambusa i.e.: Bambusa blumeana, Bambusa maculata, B. striata, B. vulgaris and Bambusa sp. Micromorphological characters were identified using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Leaf epidermis characters separated B. blumeana from other species of Bambusa. Furthermore, B. striata were closely related to B. maculata in a variation of bulliform cells. As an invention, we release peltate hair as a new type of trichome in Bambusa. The presence of numerous prickles, trichomes, and bulliform cells may be especially useful in delimiting species.

ABSTRACT.A study on the leaf anatomy of Cordiera sessilis (Rubiaceae), a native medicinal shrub from Brazilian Cerrado was carried out to identify features that may be useful in species recognition. Leaves were collected, fixed and processed by usual techniques, and studied by light and electron microscopy. Quantitative analyzes of stomata and trichomes were performed. In addition to the typical anatomical characteristics of Rubiaceae leaves, two types of vascular patterns were identified in the petiole: in distal part, the vascular system is arranged cylindrically surrounded by sclerenchyma sheath and in proximal part the vascular system is arranged in U-shape coupled to sclerified cells. The micromorphological organization of leaf surface, epicuticular wax types, the petiole pattern and histochemical characteristics as the presence of druses, crystal sand and alkaloids and absence of raphides in the mesophyll, midrib and petiole are considerate representative characteristics of C. sessilis and may be useful in the species recognition.Keywords: "Marmelinho", plant anatomy, histochemical tests, Cerrado, medicinal plant.Anatomia foliar de Cordiera sessilis (Vell.) Um estudo da anatomia foliar de Cordiera sessilis (Rubiaceae), um arbusto medicinal nativo do Cerrado brasileiro foi realizado com o objetivo de identificar características úteis no reconhecimento da espécie. As folhas foram coletadas, fixadas e processadas por meio de técnicas usuais e estudadas em microscopia de luz e eletrônica. As análises quantitativas dos estômatos e tricomas foram realizadas. Além das características anatômicas típicas das folhas de Rubiaceae, dois padrões vasculares foram identificados no pecíolo: na porção distal, o sistema vascular disposto cilindricamente, contornado por uma bainha esclerenquimática e na porção proximal, o sistema vascular organizado em forma de U associado a células esclerenquimáticas. A organização micromorfológica da superfície foliar e da cera epicuticular, o padrão do pecíolo e as características histoquímicas como a presença de drusas, areia cristalina e alcaloides e a ausência de cristais do tipo ráfides no mesofilo, nervura central e pecíolo são consideradas características representativas de C. sessilis e podem ser úteis para o reconhecimento da espécie.Palavras-chave: Marmelinho, anatomia vegetal, testes histoquímicos, Cerrado, planta medicinal.
