Scalpel excision of basal cell carcinomas

Abstract: A total of 468 coded, histologically proved basal cell carcinomas were excised from 446 patients in the Skin and Cancer Unit of New York University Medical Center from 1955 to 1967. The five-year cumulative recurrence rate was 6.8%. The highest recurrence rates, in areas in which sufficient data were available, were for the periocular regions, the scalp, and the nose and paranasal areas. Following re-treatment of recurrences, 464 of the 468 lesions (99.1%) were cured at the time of the most recent examination.… Show more

“…However, the scalp and other high-risk areas on the face have already been associated with higher recurrence rates. 15 - 22 , 29 , 32 , 37 , 41 , 53 , 55 , 66 Based on these results, tumor site seems to influence cure rates, although this association is not significant for some authors. Following this reasoning, the recurrence rates in these high-risk areas may be related to the use of smaller safety margins and not to specific tumor characteristics.…”

“…The recurrence rates for primary BCC range from 0.5% to 10.1%, and from 2% to 11.6% for previously treated BCC. 3 , 11 , 13 , 21 , 23 , 24 , 27 , 41 - 45 Higher recurrence rates occur with incompletely excised BCC and range from 14% to 41%. 17 , 18 , 23 - 25 , 32 , 33 , 39 , 46…”

“…Many studies have demonstrated that the predilection site of cutaneous malignant masses is in the face. Bart et al [22] noted a higher rate of occurrence and recurrence in masses located on the ear and lips. Buettner and Raasch [23] estimated the body site-specific incidence rate for cutaneous malignant masses and reported that it was most commonly found in the lip, orbit and naso-labial areas.…”
