Scalable synthesis of WS 2 on graphene and h-BN: an all-2D platform for light-matter transduction

Abstract: By exhibiting a measurable bandgap and exotic valley physics, atomically-thick tungsten disulfide (WS2) offers exciting prospects for optoelectronic applications. The synthesis of continuous WS2 films on other two-dimensional (2D) materials would greatly facilitate the implementation of novel all-2D photoactive devices. In this work we demonstrate the scalable growth of WS2 on graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) via a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. Spectroscopic and microscopic analysis reve… Show more

“…WS2 crystals present only two different orientations related to each other by a rotation of 60°. This suggests the existence of an epitaxial relation between WS2 and graphene, which was already reported for monolayer WS2 directly grown on 2D materials [19,21,26,27].…”

“…At the same time, direct growth methods can provide much cleaner interfaces than those obtained in mechanical stacked samples, especially when two-step growth approaches are employed. Direct bottom-up growth methods have already been reported for the synthesis of h-BN on top of graphene 68,69 and of graphene on h-BN; [70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84] of several TMDs on graphene, including MoS 2 , 69,[85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96] WS 2 , [97][98][99][100] MoSe 2 , 101 WSe 2 , 69,90,102,103 105 and of other materials such as GaSe, 106,107 nontransition metal chalcogenides [108][109][110] , single layers of metal oxides such as ZnO, 111 or perovskites 112 on graphene. Most of those methods to synthesize heterostructures have evolved along with the ...…”

“…,. While monolayer growth has been achieved using various techniques, CVD grown monolayer decorated with Ag nanoparticle is not explored much with precise control over uniform thickness. While the direct use of sun light for photocatalytic bacterial disinfection might be attractive for low cost water treatment, the use of fluorescent light is more relevant for actual household applications to supply potable water.…”
