SARS-CoV-2 is not found in the sweat of COVID-19 positive patients

Abstract: Background As the SARS-CoV-2 virus made a pandemic all over the world, its transmission routes became significant. Transmission from human to human is known, but other possible routes are not determined well. Aims This study aimed to reveal the presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus in sweat. Methods This prospective study was conducted in a tertiary care education and training hospital. Fifty patients were included in this study. Skin disinfection was done with an alcohol-based solution. Swabs for RT-PCR (real-time rev… Show more

“…However, studies conducted so far failed to demonstrate the sweat as a possible route of transmission. 8,9 We investigated the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in sweat, as a possible under-considered potential mechanism of virus transmission. Twenty-two patients (9 males, 13 females, mean age 73.5 years), hospitalized for acute COVID-19, were tested for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in sweat.…”

“…Based on former results showing that beta-propiolactone (BPL) inactivation does not interfere with scent dog detection and for easier and safer handling of samples, most positive and negative samples were BPL inactivated as formerly described 8 14. As sweat samples from infected patients are not considered to pose a relevant infection risk,26 also non-inactivated sweat samples from SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative individuals were presented. These samples were collected during the training period at the cooperating test centre and used directly in training.…”
