Sarcopenia prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia in older people living in a nursing home in Ankara Turkey

Abstract: Almost one-third of older nursing home residents were diagnosed with sarcopenia according to European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People criteria in this study in Turkey. Calf circumference and body mass index were associated with increased risk of sarcopenia among nursing home residents. This is the first study evaluating sarcopenia using European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People criteria in Turkey. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2016; 16: 903-910.

“…To our knowledge, this is the first report on the prevalence of sarcopenia in hospitalized patients with respect to their dependent ambulation status. Most previous studies of sarcopenia in hospitalized patients 2 , 10 , 12 and institutionalized elderly 7 9 excluded those who could not walk or were bedridden. Smoliner et al 13 included all admitted patients, but some could not engage in functional tests or HGS, although all of them could perform either of the tests.…”

“…Sarcopenia, a geriatric syndrome associated with the decline of muscle mass and strength, 1 is a predictor of poor outcomes, including mortality, disability, and poor quality of life 1 3 . The prevalence of sarcopenia differs among settings, with values of 1%–40% in community‐dwelling elderly, 4 6 29%–85% in institutionalized elderly, 7 9 and 22%–37% in hospitalized patients 2 , 10 13 . Diagnostic methods for sarcopenia commonly rely on measurements of muscle mass, gait speed, physical performance, and handgrip strength (HGS).…”

“…The same is true for recommended muscle mass measurement tools DEXA and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) [2]; however, in contrast to the other components of the algorithm, these tools are not available everywhere, need specialized personnel to be performed, are more expensive and not very popular even among geriatricians [19]. Not-withstanding, there are an increasing number of reports that use the algorithm using CC as the muscle mass measurement [2025]. …”
