Sampling effort and fish species richness in small terra firme forest streams of central Amazonia, Brazil

Abstract: Small streams are important components of the landscape in terra firme forests in central Amazonia and harbor a large number of fish species. “…It has been reported for streams in south-eastern Brazil that 40 channel widths were not sufficient to estimate species richness in those systems using electrofishing and one single pass (Terra et al 2013). Further, a study on Amazonian Terra firme streams where a combination of nets and one single fishing pass were used, established a minimum sampling length for reaches of around 70 times mean wetted width to estimates species richness (Anjos & Zuanon 2007). However, this is most unlikely because the assessment of Terra firme streams reported lower species richness with a total richness of 61 species, and a mean per 20 m reach of 6.4 (SD = 2.5) for first-order streams, 9.4 (SD = 2.2) for second-order streams and 15.1 (SD = 5.0) for third-order streams (Anjos & Zuanon 2007), compared with the present study with a total richness of 162 species and a mean per sample of 32.2 species (SD 9.9) where the mean site/reach length was approximately 40 m. It is therefore, important that not only the sampling length of the reach but also the intensity of the fishing effort in Terra firme streams be considered, and that more sampling sites be included, with day and night sampling across six sampling dates, and in this case extended over almost 2 years.…”
