Abstract: Salvia miltiorrhiza bunge (SM) is a popular herb for alleviating menopausal symptoms, although the scientific evidence of applying SM to estrogen replacement therapy is limited. In this study, we characterized the estrogenic activity of SM using in vivo models of immature and ovariectomized (OVX) mice and performed in vitro studies focusing on the estrogen receptor (ER) pathway for further molecular characterizations. SM treatments demonstrated significant estrogenic activity by promoting the development of ut… Show more

“…Ginkgo biloba has antiinflammatory properties [7] and stimulates hippocampal neurogenesis [8]. Ginsenoside Rg1 inhibits oxidative stress‐induced neuronal apoptosis [9], protects against neurodegeneration in cultured hippocampal neurons [10], and improves memory function in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and estrogen‐deficient rat models [11,12]. Saffron has the capacity to scavenge oxygen free radicals [13], improve learning and memory in animal models of chronic stress [14], and alleviate neuronal injury in vitro and in vivo [15].…”

“…Tanshen is one of the most commonly used natural medicines in clinical practice. It has been reported to have cardiovascular effects, including increased coronary blood flow, the expansion of coronary arteries, and prevention of myocardial infarction and myocardial ischemia, as well as being used to treat gastric cancer, liver cancer, leukemia and cervical cancer ( 42 , 43 ). Tanshinones are the main components of tanshen, and tanshinone IIA is one of the most abundant tanshinones.…”

“…Estrogens are synthesized in the ovary or testis and adrenal gland [24]. The adrenal gland becomes the principal tissue for secreting estrogen after ovariectomy.…”
