Salicylates and Hypoglycemia

Abstract: DURING the past 18 months we have seen three patients who developed hypoglycemia in association with salicylate ingestion. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize the importance of considering and recognizing this association. The major risk, particularly in the elderly, is the development of hypoglyeaemia and the advantage of salicylates is that whilst they may lower blood sugar and abolish glycosuria and even moderate ketonuria, they do not produce hypoglycaemia (always excepting acute salicylate intoxication, in which hypoglycaemia has been reported (Barnett et al., 1942;Cotton and Fahlberg, 1964) and the rare idiosyncrasy (Limbeck et al, 1965)). Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.
