Abstract: ObjectiveThe present study is to describe the clinical impact of S100 and S100β for the evaluation of cerebral damage in cardiac surgery with or without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).MethodsQuantitative results of S100 and S100β reported in the literature of the year range 1990-2014 were collected, screened and analyzed.ResultsCerebrospinal fluid and serum S100 levels showed a same trend reaching a peak at the end of CPB. The cerebrospinal fluid/serum S100 ratio decreased during CPB, reached a nadir … Show more

“…The s100b level did not change (20.76 AE 6.69 pg/mL vs. 20.73 AE 7.53 pg/mL) with the clinical improvement, so we were unable to conclude that s100b could predict treatment effect from antidepressants. To our knowledge, serum s100b is well accepted as a sensitive biomarker for cerebral damage [10]. Does the increased plasma s100b levels in MDD indicate minor cerebral damage?…”

“…Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is an intracellular enzyme found in neurons, neuroendocrine cells, platelets, and erythrocytes [64]. S-100B is expressed in adipose tissue and the thymus [65]. An initial elevation in S-100B levels due to brain injury occurs at least 24 h after surgery [65].…”

“…S-100B is expressed in adipose tissue and the thymus [65]. An initial elevation in S-100B levels due to brain injury occurs at least 24 h after surgery [65]. S-100 release is biphasic, starting three to five hours after brain injury and occurring a second time 48 h after the insult [66].…”

“…Studies have shown increases in biomarker levels, such as S100β for BBB disruption and neuron specific enolase for neuronal injury, to be indicative of cerebral damage in patients undergoing on-pump cardiac surgery compared to off-pump cases (911) which may lead to a lower prevalence of delirium (12). These findings suggest a greater inflammatory response with exposure to CPB.…”
