Rural Smart Grids: planning, operation and control

Abstract: Rural Smart Grids enables the incorporation of distributed generation as while as the development of the rural communities. In this paper Smart Grid characteristics are presented and challenges of its integration in the network are analysed. Differential characteristics of Rural Smart Grids are summarized and areas that should be investigated to achieve their high scale implementation are pointed out.

“…Focusing on the rural systems, the majority of rural distribution networks comprise long overhead Medium Voltage (MV) lines, which are operated between 1 kV and 36 kV [5,23] with bare cables [4]. From these MV lines, overhead Low Voltage (LV) lines feed customers up to few hundred meters away by crossing valleys, mountains and forests.…”

“…The rural distribution circuits are sized according to their mechanical factors rather than according to voltage drops or maintaining the continuity of supply to a number of large consumers [5,23]. Accordingly, Distributed System Operators (DSOs) have been replacing the LV overhead bare lines with overhead or underground three-or four-wire cables, which are more reliable but more expensive.…”

“…Examples of action are the 20-20-20 goals tracked by the European Union [5]. This plan consists in reaching a 20% reduction of CO 2 emissions, a 20% share of energy from lowcarbon energy sources and 20% reduction in the use of primary energy by improving energy efficiency by 2020 [6]. The need to protect the environment, particularly by limiting the use of fossil fuels, is also reflected in habitat in which solar energy is heavily used especially for countries with a supportive legislative and fiscal framework [7], [8].…”
