Rotorcraft simulations: a challenge for CFD

Abstract: This paper gives an overview of CFD techniques developed and used at ONERA for rotorcraft applications. First, the complex multidisciplinary environment around helicopters, in which aerodynamics, flight dynamics, aeroelasticity and aeroacoustics strongly interact, is highlighted. Rotorcraft simulations are thus performed by comprehensive codes capable of dealing with the whole system efficiently, using integrated simplified models for each discipline, e.g. the aerodynamics. However, fast aerodynamic models can… Show more

“…CFD software is used for analyzing the aerodynamic performance of moving vehicles to assess the aerodynamic performance. CFD is widely used in many elds, and improving CFD techniques helps improve results and reduce errors [7]. Even though CFD software provides good results, researchers prefer to compare the results obtained from CFD with wind tunnel testing.…”

“…Since the first application of CFD to the rotary wing (Caradonna and Isom 1972), recent solutions of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations offer substantial developments in the computation of complex aero-dynamics around the rotorcraft (Ahmad and Duque 1996, Pomin and Wagner 2002, Costes et al 2012, Kranzinger et al 2016) and the similar applications (Adeeb et al 2016). In this paper, a CFD-based methodology is adopted to simulate the aero-dynamic characteristics, and therefore, the performance of hovering AUH rotor blades.…”

“…e aerodynamic performance of helicopter has a great impact on its overall performance, which is a key problem to be solved in engineering development. Hovering state is one of the most important ight states of a helicopter, which must be considered in the process of helicopter aerodynamic design [1].…”
