Rolling closed string tachyons and the big crunch

Abstract: We study the low-energy effective field equations that couple gravity, the dilaton, and the bulk closed string tachyon of bosonic closed string theory. We establish that whenever the tachyon induces the rolling process, the string metric remains fixed while the dilaton rolls to strong coupling. For negative definite potentials we show that this results in an Einstein metric that crunches the universe in finite time. This behavior is shown to be rather generic even if the potentials are not negative definite. T… Show more

“…In the case of spatially delocalized tachyon condensation [4,6] the question of allowed states is also of interest. Although time effectively stops in the case of decay to nothing [4], this alone does not preclude unitarity; ordinary quantum mechanics formulated on a finite time interval is unitary.…”

“…Interestingly, it was conjectured in [24] that the twisted closed string condensation removes the regions with CTC as the stringy version of chronology protection [25]. Recent related works are given in [26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33].…”
