(1) Background: “Patient health information” promote health literacy. “Patient guidelines” as a sub group reflect the current evidence about illnesses and treatment options adapted to the needs of laypersons. Little is known about factors promoting and hindering their use by people affected by mental illness and their relatives. (2) Methods: Telephone interviews (N = 15; n = 4 adults affected by mental illness, n = 5 relatives, n = 6 both applicable) were conducted according to the Sørensen model of health literacy. Data were recorded, transcribed and content-analyzed following Mayring. (3) Results: Health information is used regularly by individuals affected by mental illness and their relatives, but “patient guidelines” are largely unknown. Yet, there is a great willingness to use them. Main barriers are a lack of statistical knowledge, the complexity of health-related topics and cognitive impairment sometimes accompanying mental illnesses. Target group-oriented adaptation as well as transparent and even-handed presentation of (dis-)advantages of treatment options can increase trust. (4) Conclusions: Health information and guidelines can help affected persons and relatives to make treatment decisions by conveying unbiased, up-to-date knowledge. Target group-specific adaptations should be made for psychiatric illnesses and features specific to mental illnesses compared to physical illnesses should be included. Clinical practice guidelines must be distributed more widely to increase their impact.

BackgroundStarting in the 1990s in the United States, individuals with lived experience of mental health crises and recovery have been employed as peer support workers (PSWs) internationally. However, the implementation of PSW in clinical contexts remains challenging.MethodsThis manuscript presents and discusses the methodological framework of the ImpPeer‐Psy5 study on the PSW implementation in the German mental healthcare sector. This study used a mixed‐methods and collaborative research approach, as well as participatory research strategies. After describing the study design, populations, teamwork and assessments, the epistemic challenges of its methodological framework will be critically discussed and how it has iteratively shaped the object of study.Discussion and Practical ImplicationsThe healthcare, policy and funding context of PSW implementation as well as the study's methodological framework have differently influenced the ways in which the implementation of PSW has been conceived in this study. The choice of a collaborative or participatory methodological framework is advised to better align research questions and procedures to the specific needs and challenges of PSWs and other stakeholders concerned with PSW implementation.Patient and Public ContributionThe research team of the ImpPeer‐Psy5 study was collaboratively staffed by a portion of researchers who also identify as users or survivors of psychiatric services. A nonprofit organization for the training of PSWs served as a practice partner throughout the research process. Different participatory formats involve a significant number of diverse stakeholders relevant to PSW implementation.

Zusammenfassung Ziel der Studie Genesungsbegleitung spielt in der Behandlung schwer psychisch erkrankter Menschen eine zunehmende Rolle. Zur Wirksamkeit liegen internationale Befunde vor. Über Wissen, Nutzung und Nutzenbewertung ist in Deutschland bisher wenig bekannt. Die vorliegende Arbeit geht dieser Frage nach und stellt Ergebnisse aus einer Beobachtungsstudie mit 10 teilnehmenden Zentren in Süddeutschland vor. Methodik Im Rahmen der beobachtenden Querschnittsstudie mit schwer psychisch erkrankten Menschen (IMPPETUS, N=359) wurden zwischen März und September 2019 soziodemografische sowie krankheits- und behandlungsassoziierte Daten erhoben. Mittels binär logistischer Regression wurde ein möglicher Zusammenhang mit der Nutzung von Genesungsbegleitung analysiert. Ergebnisse 38% (N=138) der Befragten gaben an, von der Möglichkeit der Genesungsbegleitung zu wissen; 15% (N=55) bejahten deren Nutzung. Eine Nutzung schwankte zwischen 6,5 und 37,5% über die Standorte und war mit dem Haushaltseinkommen verbunden. Deutlich seltener wurde Genesungsbegleitung von Personen mit einem hohen gegenüber Personen mit einem geringen Haushaltseinkommen genutzt (OR=0,20 [95% CI: 0,06–0,68], p=0,01). Von den Nutzenden (N=55) gaben 78% an, diese als hilfreich bzw. äußerst hilfreich wahrgenommen zu haben. Diskussion Genesungsbegleitung erweist sich nicht nur unter Studienbedingungen hinsichtlich verschiedener Outcomes als wirksam, sondern wird auch unter Routinebedingungen in einer umschriebenen Versorgungsregion von der Mehrheit der Nutzenden als wirksam eingeschätzt. Allerdings müssen Wissen und Nutzung hinsichtlich einer Genesungsbegleitung unter (teil)stationär behandelten Personen als gering verteilt bewertet werden. Schlussfolgerung Um Genesungsbegleitung stärker in die Praxis zu implementieren, muss wirksamer als bisher über dieses Unterstützungsangebot informiert und ein (über-)regionaler Austausch über erfolgreiche Implementierungserfahrungen angestrengt werden.
