“…The first is that even though fasting has been utilized by humans for millennia and the medical community for at least a century it was not until 2013 that peer-reviewed fasting guidelines were published in the English language. These guidelines as well as an increase in scientific literature on the benefits of various types of fasting support the credibility and emerging acceptance of this intervention [ 4 , 53 55 ]. The second point is that within the fasting community – not to mention the greater medical community – there are claims, unsubstantiated by research, about the utilization and safety of water-only fasting (i.e., that it is not utilized and unsafe).…”

“…During the last decade the health‐promoting and life‐extending effects of a wide variety of variants of a standard CR diet have been examined in both humans and models species 29, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62. The major differences between the dietary variants of intermittent calorie restriction are (1) the extent of calorie reduction varying from complete fasting to a mild decrease in calorie intake and (2) the time window when the fasting/CR is applied in combination with the period in between the fasting/CR cycles.…”

“…As a "green and natural" therapy, CR has a significant effect on weight loss, which can alleviate a variety of diseases related to metabolic problems such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer (13). It has been known that fasting can improve the reproductive and mental health in women (14). In terms of male fertility, weight-loss interventions result in an improvement of semen quality in obese men (15,16).…”
