Role of redoximiRs in fibrogenesis

Abstract: Fibrosis can be defined as an excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, ultimately leading to stiffness, scarring and devitalized tissue. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, 19–25 nucleotides (nt), non-coding RNAs involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Recently, miRNAs have also emerged as powerful regulators of fibrotic processes and have been termed “fibromiRs”. Oxidative stress represents a self-perpetuating mechanism in fibrogenesis. MiRNAs can also influence t… Show more

“…MicroRNAs are also able to regulate the expression of genes controlling the generation of ROS, known to contribute to fibrotic accumulation. Therefore, therapeutic approaches targeting miRNAs involved in regulating redox balance involved in fibrosis may represent a novel strategy for drug development [ 204 ]. Understanding how coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation can help diabetic patients reveals low glutaredoxin-1 levels after treatment [ 205 ].…”

“…52,53 The hepatic antioxidant systems are controlled by epigenetic mechanisms such as changes in microRNAs expression pattern. 54,55 MicroRNAs have more recently been identified to control oxidative stress in liver and related diseases. 14 Excessive ROS production in cancer cell exerts a control on the microRNA processing machinery and transcription factors of microRNA genes that affect microRNAs expression level, such as those involved in the control of the cellular redox homeostasis.…”
