Role of Mesh Pore Size in Dynamic Membrane Bioreactors

Abstract: Two identical bench-scale Self-Forming Dynamic Membrane BioReactors (SFD MBR) were set-up and operated for the treatment of real urban wastewater. The two bioreactors were equipped with meshes of different mesh pore size. Meshes having pore size values of 20 and 50 µm were tested under solid retention time (SRT) of 15 d, whereas meshes with 50 and 100 µm pore sizes were compared under SRT of 50 d. The results of long-term experiments showed very good overall performances by all systems at the steady state. Hig… Show more

“…Mahat, et al [ 40 ] concluded that the DM layer played an important role in removing the organic matter. The effluent quality of the 800 mesh nylon net was obviously higher than that of the 50 g non-woven fabric due to the smaller pore size and the rapid formation of the DM layers [ 41 ]. The solids in the permeate showed a decreasing trend, while the solids in the cake layers and solids’ residue amounts in the pore after physical cleaning increased ( Table S6 ).…”

“…The pore size of the support material was demonstrated to play a relevant role during the initial formation phase of dynamic membranes and after cleaning of the support itself [32]. In the same paper, the authors asserted that the mesh pore size had negligible effects on the cleaning requirements and a small influence on the effluent quality under their tested conditions (overall a permanent slight air scouring), i.e., a stop for TMP increase at least once every 5 days, in their best case.…”

“…Membranes can be manufactured with either symmetrical or asymmetrical structures, and with different configurations (flat sheets, tubes, honeycombs) [ 5 ]. Porous membranes can be classified according to their pore size, with different pore sizes suitable for specific applications (see Table 1 ) [ 6 , 7 ]. While macropores allow the filtration of oily emulsions and bacteria, mesopores separate most viruses, and micropores can be used to separate antibiotics, ions, and small neutral molecules (either in the gas phase or in the liquid phase).…”
