“…In contrast, concomitant administration of cysteamine and cimetidine caused a significant decrease in gastric acid secretion and a significant increase in the serum gastrin level as compared to the levels seen after treatment with cysteamine alone, but had no influence on the labelling index of the antral mucosa. These findings indicate that hypersecretion of acid, but not hypergastrinemia associated with hyposecretion of acid or achlorhydria, exerts a protective effect against gastric carcinogenesis, and that this effect may be related to i t s activity in decreasing proliferation of the antral mucosa.Gastrointestinal hormones are involved in regulation of growth of normal and malignant cells in gastrointestinal tract and pancreas (Johnson, 1977;Lamers and Jansen, 1988;Townsend et al, 1986). We previously found that administration of tetragastrin in depot form to Wistar rats after MNNG treatment for 25 weeks resulted in a significant increase in gastric acid secretion accompanied by a significant reduction in the incidence of gastric cancer (Tatsuta et al, 19776).…”

“…Three groups have demonstrated that progastrin is the major species present in extracts of human colonic tumours, at levels up to 5 pmoVg wet eight.^^^,^^^,^^^ Both the Rehfeld221 and Dockray228 groups found that the levels of progastrin in the tumour samples were significantly higher than the levels in the surrounding normal mucosa, while K w h and coworkers229 reported a significant difference only for glycine-extended gastrin. Low levels (11-36 pg/106 cells per 72 h) of gasMCCK-like immunoreactivity were observed with antisem specific for mature amidated gastrin in media conditioned by five colon carcinoma cell and in lysates of the rat pancreatic 171 135 174 142 174 121 206 130 204 342 176 114 176 124 203 165 207 180 203 154 207 139 179,208 145 208,209 NS 210 142 208 NS 210 132 208 137 208 152 208 144 211 104 211 155 18 330 212 128…”

“…Colorectal cancers have been previously regarded as hormone-independent tumors. It has only recently been realized that the growth of tumors in the digestive tract may be regulated by several gastrointestinal hormones and growth factors (Willems, 1977;Townsend et al, 1986;Lamers and Jansen, 1988). Endogenous or exogenous gastrin can stimulate the growth of transplanted or carcinogen-induced colon cancers in vivo as well as the proliferation of colon cancer cells in vitro Lamote and Willems, 1988;Sirince et al, 1985).…”
