This study was carried out to determine the characterization of brown coir fiber which is used as a potential reinforcement in polymer composites. The fiber is extracted from the husk of the coconut seeds which are collected in Sri Lanka. Anyhow the above-mentioned characterization can hardly be seen when it comes to the Sri Lankan context. Since the evaluation of their physical, mechanical, and chemical properties are significant before commencing the material development process and applications for this fiber. Several testing were carried out to evaluate the above-mentioned properties. There, the functional groups of coir fiber were obtained by Fourier Transform Infrared analysis and Crystallinity Index and Crystallite size were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The surface morphology and cross-sectional features were investigated through Scanning Electron Microscopy. The thermo-gravimetric method was adopted to study the thermal stability of coir fiber. The density and diameter of coir fiber were measured utilizing pychometric method and optical microscope respectively. Tensile strength was measured using an electronic tensometer and then find out the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and elongation at breaking point. The average density of brown coir fibers was 1.018 g/cm 3 and average diameters were 0.30 mm. The Crystallinity Index and the crystal-line size were 37.28% and 0.4331 nm respectively. Ultimate tensile strength, Young's modulus, and Elongation of the coir fiber were ranging from 94-159 MPa, 1.2-1.8 GPa, and 21-67%, respectively.

Waste polyethylene creates serious environmental and social problems in Sri Lanka. The amount of waste polyethylene increases daily, further aggravating environmental and social issues. Finding out the most suitable solution for this is a vital requirement. This research focuses on investigating the possibilities to convert this waste polyethylene as a sustainable construction material by combining it with readily available coconut fibre. A preliminary investigation was carried out on thermoplastic/coconut fiber composites to evaluate their suitability in the construction industry. Composite sheets, 2.5 mm and 3.2 mm thick, were developed by varying coir fibre weight with a suitable polymer matrix using a hot press machine. In this step, mechanical properties of the composite material were measured through tensile and bending tests. The tests were carried out complying with ASTM D3039 and ASTM D790, respectively. The surface morphology of coir fiber and the fractured surface of failure material were investigated through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Maximum tensile strength was observed as 6.75 N/mm 2 when the coir wt. fraction is inbetween 20-30% by total weight. The maximum bending strength was 29.85 N/mm 2 when the coir fraction is almost 25% by total weight. The corresponding mechanical properties are compared with the available materials in the industry.

The issue of brittleness and low post-peak load energy associated with the plain HSC led to the development of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) by using discrete fiber filaments in the plain matrix. Due to the high environmental impact of industrial fibers and plasticizers, FRC development is ecologically challenged. Sustainability issues demand the application of eco-friendly development of FRC. This study is aimed at the evaluation of coir as a fiber-reinforcement material in HSC, with the incorporation of silica fume as a partial replacement of cement. For this purpose, a total of 12 concrete mixes were produced by using three different doses of coir (0%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% by wt. of binder) with silica fume (0%, 5%, and 10% as volumetric replacements of cement). The examined parameters include compressive strength, shear strength, splitting tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, water absorption, and chloride ion permeability. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique was adopted to observe the microstructure of the CF-reinforced concrete. The results revealed that due to the CF addition, the compressive strength of HSC reduces notably; however, the splitting tensile strength and shear strength experienced notable improvements. At the combined incorporation of 1.5% CF with 5% silica fume, the splitting tensile strength and shear strength of the concrete experienced improvements of 47% and 70%, respectively, compared to that of the control mix. The CF incorporation is detrimental to the imperviousness of concrete. The combined incorporation of CF and silica fume is recommended to minimize the negative effects of CF on the permeability resistance of concrete. The SEM results revealed that CF underwent a minor shrinkage with the age.
