Role of activin A in carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver injury

Abstract: These data show that activin A is involved in CCl4-induced acute liver injury. Blocking activin A actions may be a therapeutic approach for acute liver injury.

“…BH extracts were shown to have the strongest antioxidant potential among 12 types of colored berries (Chen et al., ) and possess hepatoprotective effects (Palíková et al., ). However, as more detailed studies on these hepatoprotective effects are lacking, we aimed to evaluated the effect of BH extracts against CCl 4 ‐induced acute hepatic damage in mice (Ferreira et al., ; Wang et al., ); we examined three different extract types, BHw, BHj, and BHe, for their suitability as potent hepatoprotective medicinal foods.…”

“…Acute liver damage was induced by single IP injection of CCl 4 (Sigma-Aldrich, St Louis, MO, USA), dissolved in olive oil (Sigma-Aldrich, St Louis, MO, USA) 1:19 (v/v) (5%) in a volume of 10 ml/kg (equivalent to 0.5 ml/kg of CCl 4 ), at 1 h after the seventh administration of the test material in accordance with previously established methods (Al-Sayed, Abdel-Daim, Kilany, Karonen, & Sinkkonen, 2015;Al-Sayed et al, 2014;Fahmy, Al-Sayed, Abdel-Daim, Karonen, & Singab, 2016;Ferreira et al, 2010;Wang et al, 2013). Instead of CCl 4 , equal volumes of olive oils were administered to the intact control mice; further, distilled water was orally administered 1 h after the seventh administration.…”

“…After CCl 4 -induced liver injury, activin A expression is elevated, which results in liver fibrosis (8). Blocking the activity of activin A with anti-activin A antibodies after CCl 4 treatment reduces the necrotic area and the secretion of serum transferases (22). However, activin A was also shown to induce the renewal of liver architecture by inducing collagen production in hepatic stellate cells (HSC) and tubulogenesis of LSECs (23,24).…”
