Abstract: Objective: Although benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is an idiopathic, age-related epilepsy syndrome with favorable outcome, recent studies have shown impairment in specific neuropsychological tests. The objective of this study was to analyze the comorbidity between dyslexia and BECTS. Method: Thirty-one patients with clinical and electroencephalographic diagnosis of BECTS (group A) and 31 paired children (group B) underwent a language and neuropsychological assessment performed with several … Show more

“…Both these children were well controlled on valproate therapy. Dyslexia was a known morbidity in 19.4% of children with rolandic epilepsy in a recent study by Oliveria et al 20 Discrepancy between these and our results are likely to be due to small sample size and children from higher middle class main stream school. SLD severity is expected to be more with early age of onset of seizures.…”

“…These findings are consistent with recent studies (Goldberg-Stern et al, 2010;Kárpáti, Donauer, Somogyi & Kónya, 2015;Oliveira, Neri, Capelatto, Guimarães & Guerreiro, 2014) which reported statistically significant differences in working memory tasks, revealing losses in this ability in children diagnosed with RE when compared with healthy children. In addition to that, Goldberg-Stern and colleagues (GoldbergStern et al, 2010) found the verbal ability was compromised in the clinical subgroup, through poor performance in tasks considered to be dependent on language and poor performance on the Digit Span task, both forward and backward; they concluded that the working memory is a strong indicator for the acquisition and development of language skills.…”

“…These findings are consistent with previous studies that suggest that a compromise in this ability in this clinical subgroup impacts the children's level of reading and writing (Amaral et al, 2015;Bedoin et al, 2011;Oliveira, 2011;Oliveira et al, 2014).…”

“…A growing body of literature has demonstrated that children with epilepsy face numerous challenges, including a high burden of psychiatric and behavioral comorbidities that often go untreated or even unrecognized [ 1 4 ]. Benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BCECTS, also known as benign Rolandic epilepsy) is the most frequent form of epilepsy in childhood [ 5 ], and about 15 % of all children with epilepsy have BCECTS [ 6 ]. Because of the high frequency of BCECTS among all cases of pediatric epilepsy, special attention has been given to the rate of neuropsychiatric comorbidities in this condition.…”
