Rock slope stability along road cut of Kulikawn to Saikhamakawn of Aizawl, Mizoram, India

Abstract: Landslide is a natural hazard which carries water, mud, debris and sometimes large boulders. Earthquakes, heavy rainfall and tectonic forces are natural responsible factors for landslides, whereas overpopulation and rapid development in the hilly region are unnatural factors which involve human activities such as construction/maintenance of roads, highways, railways and buildings by the unplanned excavation of rock slopes. Both natural and unnatural factors have been accountable for the increase in the probabi… Show more

“…Scientists have used geophysical exploration, geologically related methods, optical remote sensing, microwave remote sensing, and airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) to recognize landslides from their morphology, deformation, form, etc., to intelligently identify potential landslide hazards [7,[9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Geophysical exploration methods and geologically related methods focus on landslide structures and their motion processes using displacement models, critical acceleration models, semiempirical approaches, numerical methods, and related physical exploration equipment to determine the distribution of potential landslide hazards [13,[16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…The stabilized original and modi ed slopes are required for the constructional activities of the new transport corridors (Sharma et al 2013). The road cut slope stability can get affected because of the improper methods applied for constructing and widening of the highway stretches in the mountanous regions (Singh et al 2013;Sardana et al 2019). Hence the geotechnical studies are important to understand the geological conditions beofore the construction of any project like dam, tunnel, and road etc.…”

“…With respect to the hard rock, the failure commonly occurs along the discontinuity planes [1,4,10]. Similarly, unevenly oriented discontinuities in a rock mass can cause slope instability along with the road cut [11]. The rock-cut failure is deeply associated with extreme rainfall and the occurrence of major tectonic faults or small-scale discontinuities [5].…”
